ConXión’s Day Worker Center (DWC) provides individuals with immediate employment, as well as a safe and a supportive environment as an alternative to street solicitation and parking lots. The DWC provides day jobs where workers can slowly become self-reliant. Workers pride themselves in earning a day’s wage and are able to eventually purchase a bike, a car to sleep in, or many have roomed in apartments together after they have saved up enough money. Since many of the houseless formerly had employment and hit on hard times, we are often able to have our employment specialist work with them and help them secure permanent employment. By addressing the root/start of the homeless cycle, ConXión’s goal is to decrease and address the issue at the onset.
The DWC matches employers with workers who are best fitted for the job at hand, providing employers with reliable, honest help. Many program participants are the recently unemployed, ex-offenders, undocumented and/or houseless. The DWC provides assistance to unemployed and houseless with the goal of avoiding long term unemployment which can lead to permanent homelessness. There is no other program of this kind in Santa Clara County. Many, if not all of the participants, fall through the cracks of qualifying for all other work programs.
Living in a creek bed or on the streets, does not make a person presentable for employment. Unlike any other Day Worker Center in Northern California, the ConXión’s DWC provides each individual with:
- Two meals a day
- Laundry services
- Computer lab
- Bi-weekly mobile health van
- Weekly food bag specific to the houseless population
- Support services
- Anger Management & Conflict Resolution workshops
DWC participants have access to ConXión’s other services which include: Education, Behavioral
